About the conference

The Public Health England (PHE) annual conference 2019 will take place on the 10-11th September at the University of Warwick. It will bring together over 1,500 participants from a range of sectors and expertise, and offer the opportunity to learn and share knowledge and experience to help improve public health.

This year’s conference focuses on some of the areas where PHE can make the greatest improvements in health and reduce health inequalities:

  • promoting a smoke free generation
  • giving children the best start in life
  • tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
  • supporting place-based health
  • producing world-class science

The GO Lab will be hosting an interactive session at the conference. We will be joined by leading government commissioners, innovative service delivery organisations and outstanding academics. They will share with the audience their insights into how and when a focus on outcomes in healthcare can lead to greater social impact.

GO Lab session: Place-based commissioning for health outcomes

Can a focus on outcomes help tackle core public health challenges? This interactive session will explore the this crucial question. It will look at the implementation of  outcomes based approaches, and the latest research in the field. Over the course of the hour, there will be three short presentations followed and discussions.

11:15 Emerging evidence and insights into outcomes-focused approaches, Dr Eleanor Carter, Government Outcomes Lab

11:25 Using a Social Impact Bond to address complex care needs in children's social care, Terry Clark, London Borough of Sutton

11:35 Outcome-based approaches to improving health and wellbeing in the North East, Tara Case, Ways to Wellness

The session will cover four key areas:

  1. Health improvement of complex social groups such as vulnerable or at risk children
  2. Preventing diseases such as diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases
  3. Expressed needs of 'frequent service users' such as urgent care

This session will be of value to local authority health teams, place-based commissioners for health services; health strategy and commissioning policy professionals.
